Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is once again calling on Western countries to tighten sanctions against Russia following its invasion of its neighboring country.
But he doubts that European leaders will impose a ban on Russian oil supplies, as they have discussed. Apparently, this will only happen if the Russian military starts using chemical weapons. Zelensky said this in a video speech posted on the Telegram messaging service on Tuesday night.
- There are no words for it. Think how far it has come. Waiting for chemical weapons, he said in the video speech.
Warfare with chemical or biological weapons is prohibited according to international treaties and conventions. A group of Ukrainian and international experts will gather in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, this week to analyze the sanctions against Russia and their effectiveness.
Working to become independent
In the wake of Russia's military attack on Ukraine, European countries have said they will become less dependent on energy imports from Russia. So far, supplies of Russian natural gas have continued to flow, despite the sanctions imposed by Western countries.
On Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that imports of Russian oil and coal could be reduced fairly quickly, but it would take longer to find a replacement for the large amounts of natural gas that Germany receives from Russia. Germany's Economy Minister, Robert Habeck, has said that Germany could possibly halve its oil imports from Russia by the summer.
In Moscow, the government hopes to fill part of the gap that reduced European energy imports will create by increasing oil exports to Asia. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for President Vladimir Putin, on Monday, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
