Tyra field further delayed

TotalEnergies says that work to rebuild the Tyra field has been delayed by a few months.

With the uncertainty surrounding Russian gas supplies to Europe, Denmark has had high expectations that gas production from the Tyra field in the North Sea will soon resume.

But this has longer prospects than previously assumed. TotalEnergies, which operates the Tyra field on behalf of the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC), said in a press release on Wednesday that work on rebuilding the field will be delayed.

The delay means that gas will not be delivered from the North Sea until the winter season of 2023/2024. So far, the expectation has been that the Tyra field could reopen in June next year.

Covid-19 again to blame for the delay

The reason for the delay is that covid-19 has made it more difficult to obtain personnel and materials for the shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, where the field's so-called process platform is being completed.

Therefore, it will not be fully ready before it is sailed to the North Sea in September. Instead, the work must be completed when it is installed in the Tyra field, which therefore delays commissioning.

- We are taking the current energy crisis in Denmark and Europe seriously. That is why we are mobilizing significant additional resources offshore so that we can compensate as much as possible for the delays that have occurred at the shipyard and get Tyra into operation. The rebuilt Tyra field is a cornerstone of future Danish gas production, which we are fully focused on delivering as soon as possible, says Martin Rune Pedersen, CEO of TotalEnergies in Denmark.

The Tyra field was originally supposed to be ready for production during 2022, but already at the end of 2020, it was announced that the pandemic had caused a delay, which led to the start of production in the summer of 2023. That deadline has therefore not been met.

Produces enough to supply Denmark

Until its closure in September 2019, the Tyra field accounted for 90 percent of the natural gas produced in Denmark.

Because the seabed beneath the field had sunk as a result of the extraction, it was necessary to dismantle the eight old platforms, extend some of the legs and build completely new process and accommodation platforms.

Tyra II is expected to be able to produce 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas per year when it is completed. Denmark's gas consumption in 2021 was 2.15 billion cubic meters of gas. This corresponds to 0.4 percent of the EU's total gas consumption.
