Power outages on weekends may be related to high electricity consumption in the cold

According to the communications manager, more power outages in Jutland cities may be related to high pressure on the electricity grid.

Power outages hit several Jutland towns on Sunday. This includes Sæby and parts of Frederikshavn in North Jutland. Power has been restored in both places. According to the grid company Elinord, the outage is due to a "fault in the overall 60 kV grid," according to the company's website.

In Silkeborg and Skive, citizens in parts of the towns also had to do without power in their sockets this morning. In addition, 46 customers in the Hammel and Langå areas in East Jutland were also affected.

The power was restored, however, and Frederik Gelstoft Schmidt, who is the head of communications and press at N1, says that the outages may be related to the cold weather.

- The freezing temperatures are causing electricity consumption to increase. It just puts more pressure on the electricity grid. When we see these very low temperatures over a period of time, there will be some outages on the electricity grid, he says.

N1 is Jutland's largest electricity grid company, which operates and maintains the electricity grid for approximately 800,000 customers. You can find an overview of unannounced power outages on the grid companies' websites. It typically appears here when the problems are expected to be resolved.

On Sunday morning, according to the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), 18.8 degrees Celsius was measured in Isenvad in Central Jutland. You have to go back five years to find a lower temperature measured in Denmark. It was in February 2021, when 21.8 degrees Celsius was measured.

DR writes that the temperature dropped further during Sunday morning. At 7:40 a.m., the temperature was down to minus 19.4 degrees Celsius in Isenvad.
