As late as Friday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she believes the time has come to introduce a price cap on the purchase of Russian gas. But if that becomes a reality, then Russia will completely cut off gas to Europe, is the threat from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, according to the Reuters news agency.

- There will simply be no Russian gas to Europe, he writes on the messaging service Telegram, referring to von der Leyen's statement.

According to Ursula von der Leyen, the price cap on gas is to be a response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's attempt to manipulate Europe's energy market, she says.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, energy prices have skyrocketed. This is due, among other things, to the fact that Russia has on several occasions restricted Europe's access to Russian gas.

- Over the past weeks and months, we have worked hard at the European level to fight back against Putin's manipulations, she said on Friday.

Gas storages fuller than usual

However, Europe can be pleased that it is ahead of the plan to fill European gas storages before winter arrives.

- We have agreed on joint storages and have reached a filling level of 80 percent on average now, two months earlier than expected, she said on Friday.

On Friday, the finance ministers of the G7 countries, consisting of the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan, will meet. They are all expected to support a global price cap on Russian oil, unnamed sources say, according to the Financial Times.

But Russia's response will be the same: The countries that impose a price cap on oil will not even be offered to buy it, says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

- Those who impose a price cap will not be among the recipients of Russian oil. We simply will not cooperate with them, he says.

He emphasizes that it is the European citizens who end up paying a higher price for a measure like a price cap.
