Homeowners across Denmark have in several cases been put off by municipal district heating projects that have been delayed and made more expensive - and this has kept otherwise unwanted gas boilers.

That is why the government will now allocate over 500 million kroner over three years until 2029 to help homeowners get heat pumps. This is according to Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M).

- We want to create security for Danes who want to convert, for example, a gas boiler to a heat pump, and who can now get the opportunity for help, he says.

The government's proposal for next year's finance law therefore allocates 185 million kroner in 2027, 2028 and 2029 for financial assistance to citizens. This is an extension of a subsidy pool that expires after 2026.

Electrically powered heat pumps are a more climate-friendly heat source than gas and oil boilers. In recent years, the technology has been in competition with district heating, with municipalities rolling out heat to more and more cities.

However, the district heating rollout has been hampered by rising prices, and many citizens have therefore waited in vain for the new heat source. At the same time, uncertainty about financial support for heat pumps has contributed to the fact that sales of heat pumps have fallen, and the number of gas boilers has not been reduced as desired.

- That is why we would like to provide reassurance that the financial framework is in place until 2029, so that even those who thought that district heating was an option can consider whether it is time to scrap their natural gas boiler, says Lars Aagaard.

In 2026, the financial support for heat pumps will be in the form of a subsidy. However, the government will, in dialogue with the industry, examine whether the scheme should instead be a deduction in the years thereafter. The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities expects that the money will be enough to help 6,500 heat pumps get started each year that the scheme lasts.
