The municipal and state-owned development company By & Havn, which is tasked with developing large and central urban areas in Copenhagen such as Ørestad and Nordhavnen, has decided to build a new container terminal, which will be located at the far end of Nordhavn with direct access to Øresund.
On the 550-meter-long quay, the 133,000 m2 and 800 million DKK container terminal will be able to continue Copenhagen's long history as a commercial port, writes By & Havn in a statement.
- More than two-thirds of all goods delivered in Copenhagen have a destination in the capital. By maintaining the terminal in the Port of Copenhagen, we save CO2 on land transport - from quay to customer in the Copenhagen area, and maintain our historical position as an active commercial port, says Copenhagen's Lord Mayor Sophie Hæstorp Andersen (S) about the decision.
Contract winner: Only happens once in a career
A name has also been given as to who will be responsible for the majority of the work to establish the new container terminal. The choice has fallen on Munck Havne & Anlæg. Companies have thus entered into a contract of 600 million DKK with City & Port to build the container terminal. The project will be carried out as a turnkey contract, Munck Havne & Anlæg states in a post on Linkedin.
- We are happy and proud to have been awarded the project to build a completely new container terminal on Danish soil, which is quite unique and probably something that only happens once in a career. It is with some satisfaction that we can contribute to the creation of new and important infrastructure through projects like this. We look forward to getting started with the work and continuing our long-standing collaboration with City & Port, says Benny Ebbe Jørgensen, CEO of Munck Havne & Anlæg
Copenhagen Malmö Port AB (CMP) will become the operator of the new container terminal when it is scheduled to be completed in 2024.
