More than 30 countries are opposed to the draft climate agreement that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has tried to push through at the COP30 climate summit, according to Colombia's delegation at COP30 in the Brazilian city of Belém.

The Colombian delegation has shared a letter signed by more than 30 countries from Europe, Asia, Latin America and several island nations in the Pacific. The letter states that the countries oppose Lula's draft agreement.

"We cannot support an outcome that does not include a roadmap for a just, orderly and equitable transition away from fossil fuels"

"We must be honest: in its current form, the proposal does not meet the minimum conditions required for a credible COP outcome," the letter says.

France and Belgium confirm that the two countries are co-signatories to the letter.

Draft does not mention fossil fuels

The Brazilian president flew to Belém on Wednesday to hold meetings with all the summit parties - rich and poor.

A statement from the Brazilian delegation said that the Brazilian host would encapsulate the most essential and controversial issues in a format that could be adopted on Wednesday - or "in the middle of the week".

A draft agreement prepared by Lula on Thursday - as seen by the AFP news agency - does not mention fossil fuels.

The head of the climate summit, Brazilian diplomat Andre Correa do Lago, is under pressure to draft an agreement text that can achieve consensus among the almost 200 delegations present in Belém.

The rule at the COP is that there must be consensus among the countries and that all countries, regardless of size, have an equal vote. COP30 is scheduled to end on Friday evening.

On Thursday, the climate summit was interrupted by a fire, which led to a premature end to Thursday's negotiations.
