Media: Germany supports Russian oil embargo

The German government has decided to support an import ban on Russian oil. This makes an EU-wide embargo more likely, writes dpa. The news agency cites sources in Brussels.

The EU has already imposed a ban on coal imports from Russia. But supplies of oil and gas are more difficult to replace. Germany has been criticized by Ukraine and also by other EU countries for not making itself independent of oil and gas from Russia.

The reason for the German change of position is believed to be that Germany has recently been successful in finding alternative suppliers of oil. In eight weeks, Germany has reduced its dependence on Russian oil from 35 percent before the invasion of Ukraine to 12 percent now.
