The Liberal Alliance will scrap the upcoming offshore wind tender worth 55.2 billion kroner and use the money to build more nuclear power plants in Denmark. This is stated in a new proposal from the party, which seeks to show the way for the establishment of nuclear power in Denmark.

- We cannot avoid the fact that it initially requires state support to get nuclear power in Denmark, the party writes in its proposal.

The Liberal Alliance recognizes that Denmark has a strong position within renewable solar and wind energy. But weather-dependent technologies are not sufficient if a fixed and consistently flowing climate-neutral electricity production is to be ensured, it says.

- Neither in relation to security of supply nor the green transition. Clean, abundant and stable energy is needed. There is a need for nuclear power, writes party leader Alex Vanopslagh on the social media X.

Has identified possible locations

The party has already identified two specific locations where it wants to build nuclear power plants. One location is at the Studstrup power plant in Aarhus, the other is at the Asnæs power plant in Kalundborg.

Specifically, the Liberal Alliance envisions that these will be nuclear power plants with small modular reactors (SMRs). The party wants to build at least one 300 MW reactor in each power plant to mainly produce electricity, while the excess heat will be used for district heating in the local area or process heat for industry.

Nuclear power has long been subject to a de facto ban in Denmark, which the Liberal Alliance wants to have lifted. Due to the ban, Denmark has no real nuclear power production today, while several other European countries such as France, Sweden and Finland have large nuclear power plants.

Yet the Liberal Alliance wants Denmark to catch up with the countries that have spent decades building their sector.

- We want to build nuclear research and a world-class nuclear industry, and we want to create strong Nordic cooperation on nuclear power, writes Alex Vanopslagh on the social media X.
