Hydrogen industry: Black day for green shipping

Denmark should take international leadership after the failed climate agreement in the IMO, believes the hydrogen industry

Shipping accounts for around 3 percent of global CO2 emissions, but the world's countries could not agree on a common climate target in the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) today. This is of great concern to the Hydrogen Industry, which is calling on the Danish government to seize the opportunity to promote green fuels and take leadership internationally.

- It is a sad day for the climate and the opportunity to do something about global emissions. Shipping accounts for around 3 percent of global CO2 emissions, and this agreement could have been the first global climate agreement that really made a difference. Unfortunately, that did not happen this time, but that does not mean that we should stop striving for greener shipping that uses green and hydrogen-based fuels. On the contrary, countries like Denmark now need to step up their efforts, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen, CEO of the Hydrogen Industry, in a statement.

He emphasizes that Denmark has the opportunity to take a leading role in the development of green fuels, and at the same time points out that there is currently no national plan to increase the production of green fuels for shipping.

If we approach it right, Denmark can play a major role in the development of green fuels and the value chains behind them. We can see that China is moving quickly in this area, IMO agreement or not, and if we want to be part of that development, we must continue to focus on green, hydrogen-based fuels, and show today's opponents that it can be done. It is both a question of leadership, climate and security of supply, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen.

The hydrogen industry is calling for both a political strategy and financial resources for the area and warns that without Danish action, Denmark risks being overtaken by countries like China.
