Back in 2023, money was set aside to establish a green domestic route in Danish air traffic, and now it is becoming a reality. It will be Norwegian, which will fly with green fuel in the tank between Aalborg and Copenhagen from March next year. This is happening after the airline has won the tender for the route, the Ministry of Transport states in a press release.

- Now two of Denmark's largest airports will be connected by a route where as much green aviation fuel as possible is used on each aircraft. Hopefully, this can help pave the way for more airlines to use more green aviation fuel in the future, says Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen (V).

The fuel used on the flights is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). It is made from non-fossil sources such as cooking oil.

Rules make completely green flight impossible

Originally, it was intended that the green domestic route would fly exclusively with green fuel, but this has proven to be impossible to implement. Today, it is only permitted to fly with a maximum of 50 percent green fuel, and therefore the tender has had to be adjusted accordingly.

The aircraft that will fly between Aalborg and Copenhagen in the future will use at least 40 percent green fuel towards the end of 2027. This will mean that a total of 6,700 tons of CO2 will be saved during the subsidy period.

A new tender will be held later, which will apply to the years 2027-2029. It is hoped that the necessary approvals will be in place so that flights can be operated with 100 percent green fuel. The government has a goal that all domestic aviation should be green by 2030.
