Copenhagen residents will have to pay more for district heating from 1 November 2025. According to HOFOR, the Capital Region Utility Company, temperatures have risen significantly this year, which has reduced heat consumption and thus the company's income. The utility company stated this in a statement.
Although less heat is used, the costs of operation and maintenance are unchanged, and therefore the price will be adjusted by three percent as early as November. Normally, price changes occur at the turn of the year.
– This year we can see that the temperature has been a full seven percent higher than we expected, and I think that is a sad picture of the climate change we are being affected by. Normally, we would adjust the price at the turn of the year, but this year we are doing it a little earlier to avoid building up a deficit that we will then have to make up later. We must always keep the price as close to the real expenses we have, so that we neither build up a surplus nor a deficit, says Gorm K. Elikofer, Director of Energy at HOFOR.
The increase corresponds to an extra 60 DKK this year for a typical apartment and 130 DKK for a detached house. For 2026, the bill is expected to increase by 200 and 460 DKK, respectively, depending on the type of home – but the total amount could still be lower if heat consumption falls.
