CIP sells half of major British battery project

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners has sold 50 percent of the Coalburn 2 battery project in Scotland to AIP Management.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has signed an agreement to sell 50 percent of the ownership in the Coalburn 2 battery plant to funds managed by AIP Management. The plant is under construction in South Lanarkshire in southern Scotland and, with a capacity of 500MW, will be one of Europe's largest battery storage facilities when completed. CIP announced in a statement.

CIP made the investment decision in December 2024 and will continue as project manager until the plant is commissioned. It is also only at commissioning that the sale of ownership shares to AIP will be completed.

- As CIP’s development and construction portfolio of UK battery projects continues to grow, we look forward to welcoming AIP as a new partner on Coalburn 2, which will be one of Europe’s largest battery projects when commissioned in 2027,” said Nischal Agarwal, Partner at CIP.

The Coalburn 2 project has secure revenue through a 10-year optimisation agreement with SSE and a 15-year capacity market agreement. Coalburn is one of three battery plants in Scotland that CIP is developing with Alcemi, which together will have an output of 1.5GW and can deliver 3GWh of electricity to the grid – enough to power over 4.5 million homes for two hours. CIP has a further 4.5GW of battery projects under development in the UK.

For AIP, the investment is a step in building a portfolio of operational battery storage in the UK, where the company is already committed to projects totalling approximately 7GW.
