Vattenfall removes unexploded World War II mines at German offshore wind projects

Vattenfall has detonated three unexploded mines from World War II in the area where the energy company plans to build offshore wind farms in the German part of the North Sea. It is reported by Offshorewind.biz.

The Swedish energy giant located the mines — each with an explosive force equivalent to 200-300 kg of TNT — as anomalies during geophysical surveys of the seabed at Nordlicht?1 and Nordlicht?2, approximately 85 km north of the island of Borkum. Vattenfall's geoscience team confirmed the mines using remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), after which controlled blasting was carried out on site in September, following regulatory approval.

Earlier this year, Vattenfall made the final investment decision on Nordlicht 1 and 2. The removal of unexploded ordnance was carried out in preparation for the start of construction in 2026. Nordlicht 1 will be built first, with the wind turbines scheduled to be installed in 2027 and the plant to be commissioned in 2028. The two parks will have a total of 112 Vestas V236?15.0?MW turbines, of which 68 will be installed in the first phase. The Nordlicht cluster will have a total capacity of 1.6 GW and is expected to produce approximately 6 TWh of electricity per year.
