Frederiksberg's mayor says "nicely no thanks" to ban on gasoline cars

Copenhagen wants to ban fossil fuel road traffic by 2030, but according to a new report, Frederiksberg is required to do the same. However, the mayor calls the ban a "mirage".

FREDERIKSBERG: If a broad majority in the Copenhagen City Council has its way, all fossil means of transport must be banned from the capital's roads by 2030. This is reported by Byrummonitor.

But this requires support from the neighboring municipality of Frederiksberg, which also needs to introduce a ban. Anything else would be "illogical", as citizens with a diesel or petrol car in Frederiksberg would not be able to drive in and out of the municipality, which is surrounded by the Municipality of Copenhagen.

This is according to a new report describing the possibilities of introducing a ban on fossil road traffic.

Therefore, Copenhagen politicians have decided to contact the neighbors in Frederiksberg to find out if they are on board with the idea of a joint ban across municipal borders.

"Completely off track"

But that idea is rejected by Frederiksberg's mayor, Michael Vindfeldt (S), who believes that the matter has "completely gone off track on Copenhagen's part".

- In even the most optimistic scenarios, perhaps 40-50 percent of Frederiksberg's cars will be electric cars by 2030, and therefore my answer as Frederiksberg's mayor will be Copenhagen mirage a nice no thanks, he writes in a response to the media outlet Byrummonitor, where he calls the proposal for a ban in 2030 a "blockade a la West Berlin".

- All parties in Copenhagen decided - without a shadow of a plan for implementation - that all non-electric cars should now be banned in 2030. And they decided it without so much as asking Frederiksberg, which is surrounded by Copenhagen, writes the mayor.

The Conservative People's Party in Frederiksberg also meets the proposal with skepticism.

- It's just a hypothetical discussion, the left is taking up in Copenhagen because it's better to pursue 'intentional politics' than politics that actually matters, says city council member Anders Storgaard (K) to Byrummonitor.

Considered as expropriation

- I think that the politicians in Copenhagen who express these views should go into national politics instead, he says, referring to the fact that the report states that it is not possible to introduce a ban at the municipal level, Anders Storgaard continues to tell Byrommonitor.

This is due, among other things, to the fact that a ban could be considered expropriation, as citizens with a diesel or petrol car would then no longer be able to use their car in their own municipality, which would be contrary to EU legislation.

Therefore, the Copenhagen City Council plans to send a letter calling on the government to investigate whether legislation can be passed that makes a ban legal. First, however, the citizens' representation will "enter into dialogue" with Frederiksberg about imposing a joint ban in 2030.

Technology and Environment Mayor of Copenhagen Line Barfoed (EL) acknowledges that there is a need for Frederiksberg to join a ban before Copenhagen can introduce one.

- Everything else doesn't make sense, she says, adding that she will encourage Christiansborg to look at the legislation at the national level. Everyone agrees that we need to get to a point where there are no longer any diesel or petrol cars, so it's just a question of how quickly it will happen.

Marcus Vesterager (S) believes that the politicians in Frederiksberg "should be able to see the logic" in a ban.

- But of course they are also right that there is a need for focus from the Folketinget. But that doesn't mean we can't look at how we can do it.

'Analysis on fossil-free road traffic in 2030' comes after a majority in Copenhagen's City Council last year voted to work towards "a complete ban on fossil-fueled driving by 2030 at the latest".

The estimate is that a ban will result in a decrease of 300,000 tons of CO2 to zero tons of CO2 per year in 2023, which corresponds to "between 24 and 31 percent of the total emissions from road transport disappearing," the report says, and it will also mean that there will be between 70 and 150 million fewer kroner in the municipal treasury as a result of a decrease in parking revenues.
