The German energy group Uniper has paid 2.6 billion euros (19.3 billion kroner) back to the German state as part of the repayment of the state aid it received during the energy crisis. The payment was made on Tuesday, the company said in a press release according to the German newspaper Die Zeit.
Uniper, which has an annual turnover of over 100 billion euros (745 billion kroner), received a total of 13.5 billion euros (100.6 billion kroner) in state aid in 2022 when the company ran into financial difficulties during the energy crisis. The German state took over 99 percent of the company in this connection. The EU Commission approved the state aid on the condition that Uniper sells a number of assets before the end of 2026.
- The payment benefits the German state and thus German taxpayers. It shows that Uniper has emerged from the crisis financially stronger and is now running a profitable business, says Uniper CFO Jutta Dönges. The company has learned from the crisis and is now ready to contribute to a secure energy supply, she adds.
The German state must reduce its ownership stake in Uniper to a maximum of 25 percent plus one share by the end of 2028. A first repayment was already made in September last year, with Uniper paying back 530 million euros (3.9 billion kroner).
Uniper has thus repaid 3.13 billion euros (23.2 billion kroner) of the total state aid of 13.5 billion euros (100.6 billion kroner), which means that the company still has to repay 10.37 billion euros (77.4 billion kroner).
and has previously announced that the company will primarily return to private hands through share sales. Uniper is Germany's largest gas company and one of the largest energy groups in Europe.
