De seneste år er salget af varmepumper faldet. Men en husstand med både elbil og varmepumpe i stedet for benzinbil og gasfyr vil kunne spare over 14.000 kroner på energiregningen i 2024. Det viser nye tal fra Green Power Denmark. (Arkivfoto). - Foto: Rune øe/Ritzau Scanpix

Home electrification is good for your wallet

Going green is not only good for the climate, it can also be good for your wallet. But there are costs associated with switching to electric cars and heat pumps.

In 2024, the annual savings will be over DKK 14,000 for households that have both replaced their petrol car with an electric car and scrapped their gas boiler in favour of a heat pump. This is shown by new figures from the industry organisation Green Power Denmark.

The annual energy bill in 2024 for electrified households is DKK 8,851. And that is DKK 14,426 lower than the amount that owners of petrol cars and natural gas boilers have to pay.

The calculation example is based on an electric car that drives 4.6 kilometres per kilowatt-hour and a petrol car that drives 15 kilometres per litre. The driving requirement for both types of car is around 10,000 kilometres. The annual heating requirement in the home is set at 13.2 megawatt-hours. However, the calculations do not include the costs of purchasing an electric car and a heat pump.

- A new electric car is a major investment for most people. And a new air-to-water heat pump can cost up to DKK 100,000 more than a new gas boiler, says Martin Ingerslev, chief economist at Green Power Denmark.

There are different types of heat pumps. An air-to-water heat pump converts the heat energy in the air outside into room heat.

Sales of heat pumps have fallen in recent years. This may be due to uncertainty about where and when district heating will be rolled out, and a lack of an end date for the gas network, Green Power Denmark estimates.

- It is important that there are financial incentives that can support citizens' green choices, says Martin Ingerslev.

On the other hand, electric car sales are still going strong, which according to Green Power Denmark is being helped by the fact that taxes are set to be significantly reduced from 2026.

Home charging is cheapest

The car owners' interest organization, FDM, has also made calculations on what it will cost to drive an electric car compared to a comparable petrol car.

- If we look exclusively at the costs of charging and petrol, electric car owners can save up to DKK 1,000 per month, says consumer economist at FDM Ilyas Dogru, but points out that the calculation is based on a driving need of 20,000 kilometers per year.

He adds that the savings will be greatest for electric car owners who have the opportunity to charge their electric car at home with their own charging box.

- And if you make sure to chase the cheap electricity prices, the savings can be even greater than 1000 DKK per month, says Ilyas Dogru.

- That is one of the advantages of the electric car - that you can wait to charge until the electricity is cheapest.

If it is not possible to charge at home, the financial gain will be smaller, because the price of public charging stations is typically higher.
