The one green domestic flight route must be spread out over several routes

It is currently only permitted to use a fuel mixture with a maximum of 50 percent green aviation fuel.

The government's plan for a domestic flight route that will fly on 100 percent sustainable fuel in 2025 is unlikely to come to fruition this year. This is because the necessary permits to fly exclusively with sustainable fuel in the tank are still not available. Therefore, the government, SF and the Unity List have agreed on a new plan, the Ministry of Transport writes in a press release.

In short, it involves putting the route out to tender on several routes so that the same climate effect is achieved. Today, it is only permitted to use a fuel mixture with a maximum of 50 percent green aviation fuel (SAF) in a single aircraft. The international permit for 100 percent SAF is still pending.

So now the parties to the agreement behind the green route have agreed to put the green route out to tender "with as much blending as possible, but distributed over several aircraft to achieve the same climate effect". How many aircraft, i.e. flight routes, is not known.

- We are now taking an initial step towards greener aviation. It is a signal to the outside world and the market that we want the green path for aviation, and it is positive that we can now prepare for the first tender, says Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen (V) in a written comment.

Can still be reached

The tender will initially run until 2026 with an option to extend to 2027. So in theory, everything can still fall into place as desired in 2025.

- We are still awaiting the international certification of 100 percent. green fuel, and in this connection I would like to acknowledge the broad political support that is now available to move forward with the best possible solution within the international framework conditions we have, says the Minister.

The Minister of Transport had already announced last year that the 2025 ambition looked difficult due to the lack of permits, so Tuesday's announcement is not surprising as such.

The idea of a domestic route in Denmark that would fly exclusively on green fuel was launched by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) in her New Year's speech in 2022.

The SVM government has since entered into an agreement on green aviation with the SF and the Unity List in December 2023. In addition to a completely green route in 2025, the ambition is that all domestic flights in Denmark will be on sustainable fuel by 2030.

After the first tender, a new tender will be held for the years up to and including 2029. This requires "the use of 100 percent green fuels, if the international certification of SAF is in place".
