Frederikshavn Port went from being a self-governing port to a municipal port on May 15 due to a massive debt of almost 1.7 billion. DKK. In terms of management, however, the repatriation has meant that the port is without clear management – says Kim Thygesen. He is CEO of one of the port's largest companies, Modern American Recycling Services, Europe A/S (M.A.R.S). The company scraps and recycles oil tankers and drilling rigs.
- Development is at a standstill, and we have told the municipality many times, says Kim Thygesen to DOI.dk and elaborates:
- Actually, we would have liked to have expanded here by 170,000 sq m. – and the area has been approved for that. But cooperation has become difficult after the port became municipal. There is a lack of people with vision.
Kim Thygesen had otherwise hoped that the port would develop the area for the expansion, so that M.A.R.S could have rented the area on a long-term contract according to the same model as the current area. That is not going to happen.
- There has to be someone who wants to be involved, and we have been told no by the municipality, he explains.
Work may end in Brazil
For the same reason, the CEO is now working on opening another site in Brazil instead. Management problems are at play here, because there are ambiguities in the management of the port.
- We don't know who we should negotiate with. At first it was the port manager, then it was a municipal director anyway. Now we have been told that it will be Karen Østergaard and Willy B. Hansen, who will be in as consultants for the rest of the year, explains Kim Thygesen about the port's executive secretary and the Port of Skagen's director.
The conclusion is very clear for Kim Thygesen about the management of the municipal port.
- I can't say that it's under control, he says and asks:
- What does the organizational chart look like for the port?
DOI.dk has tried in vain to get a comment on the management situation in the municipal port from Frederikshavn Municipality's municipal director, Thomas Eriksen.
Poul Knudsgaard was temporarily appointed as director from February this year. He resigned from his position on May 15, when the port became municipal.
