AARHUS: Aarhus has put its new shore power system into use, which makes it possible for ships to connect to the port's power cables and turn off their diesel-powered and polluting engines while they are at port, the port has announced, making it the first city in Denmark to offer shore power to cruise ships.

The Port of Aarhus has so far been visited by 35 cruise ships this season. The port expects to welcome a total of 65 cruise ships to Aarhus this year.

However, it will be voluntary for the cruise ships whether they want to connect to shore power or continue to have their polluting engines running while they are at berth. At present, only between 25 and 40 percent of all cruise ships are built to receive shore power, according to Politiken.

Copenhagen on the way

Kåre Press-Kristensen, a senior advisor at the Council for Green Transition and a specialist in air pollution, believes that Copenhagen has been given a huge "back wheel" by the Aarhusians:

- As great as it is for Aarhus, it is equally frustrating for Copenhagen. At Langelinje, the huge ships are berthed just 60 meters from residential buildings, and highly harmful pollution spills out of the ships' chimneys.

The Municipality of Copenhagen plans to provide a loan for two facilities at Langelinje and in Nordhavn, and in May received the green light from the Danish National Appeals Board for this form of co-financing in accordance with the municipal mandate.
