The Swiss government has taken the decision to close Beznau, the world's oldest nuclear power plant, which went into operation in 1969. The closure, scheduled for 2029, is part of the country's strategy to phase out nuclear power and strengthen renewable energy sources.
This is reported by the Tages-Anzeiger in a press release.
– Beznau has served us well for over 50 years, but the time has come to look ahead and prioritize sustainable energy solutions.
– The decision to close the plant is not only a technical choice, but also a step towards a safer and more environmentally friendly future.
The closure is part of Switzerland's Energy Strategy 2050, which focuses on phasing out nuclear power and investing in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. However, the decision has also sparked debate, as critics point out that Switzerland may lack a stable power supply during the transition period.
– We are aware of the challenges that come with a phasing out of nuclear power, but we see this as an opportunity for innovation and growth in the green energy sector, says the CEO of energy company Axpo, which operates Beznau.
The Beznau nuclear power plant will be decommissioned in 2029, while the authorities work on a plan for safe shutdown and decommissioning.
