The Danish Defence has been granted permission to carry out two geotechnical drillings in the harbour bottom off Auktionsgade at the Port of Esbjerg. The purpose is to investigate the composition of the seabed in preparation for the establishment of a new rescue station with a boat ramp and floating bridge. It writes JydskeVestkysten.

The permission was granted by Esbjerg Municipality on 24 October and is valid until November next year. The work is being carried out by the Establishment and Terrain Command, which is responsible for the Danish Defence's construction projects. According to the environmental technical report, the impact on the marine environment is expected to be minimal, as the drilling is carried out in closed pipes to prevent the spread of sediment or pollutants.

The municipality assesses that the risk of pollution is insignificant. Sediment samples from nearby areas show no exceedances of environmental requirements for metals, PFAS or other environmentally hazardous substances. The project area is also located outside nature protection zones, and no specially protected animal species have been registered in the area. The drillings constitute the latest part of the Danish Armed Forces' growing presence at the Port of Esbjerg. Earlier this year, the Danish Armed Forces purchased an office building on D. Lauritzens Vej, which will be converted into a new Home Guard Centre. Together, the projects paint a picture of the Port of Esbjerg as a strategic piece in Denmark's defence and preparedness.
