Outgoing Mayor of Copenhagen Lars Weiss (S) will become the new chairman of the board of Argo, a waste and energy company. He has been mayor twice, but will step down from politics at the turn of the year and take over the position from the re-elected Mayor of Roskilde Tomas Breddam (S), who has headed the board for four years. This is stated in a press release.
- I look forward to working with the new board, the management and the owner municipalities on important issues within waste, energy and climate. Significant decisions await, and I approach the task with respect for the work that has been done, says Lars Weiss.
Where the board has so far been composed of politically appointed members from the owner municipalities, the owners have decided to open up the possibility of an external chairman of the board. The company is owned by nine municipalities in Zealand and handles waste for 438,000 citizens and 34,000 companies.
Lars Weiss is an economist from the University of Copenhagen with additional education in communication from the Danish School of Media and Journalism. He has been a member of the Copenhagen Citizens' Representative Council for the Social Democrats since 2010 and has twice been acting mayor, most recently from August 2024.
He took over the position when Frank Jensen (S) resigned after pressure from the hinterland and again when Sophie Hæstorp (S) became Minister of Housing and Social Affairs after Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil (S), who instead became the lead candidate for the mayor's position.
However, she did not get it and said goodbye to Danish politics just a handful of days later, even though she was elected to the citizens' representative council and was set to become trade mayor instead of mayor.
Lars Weiss has board experience from the supply and waste sector, including as chairman of the board of Amager Resource Center from 2014 to 2018 and as deputy chairman of Hofor since 2022.
Lars Weiss is quitting politics and re-running therefore not in the municipal elections in 2025.
In 2024, Argo had a profit of 27.5 million kroner and a focus on CO2 capture and recycling. Earlier this year, the company hired Jeppe Danø as new CEO.
