Nine out of ten companies have withdrawn from billion-dollar tender for CO2 capture

Companies have withdrawn from billion-dollar tenders, so the ambition to capture 2.3 million tons of CO2 cannot be achieved.

Only one company out of ten possible is still bidding for a billion-dollar support fund to capture and store CO2.

This is clear after the municipally owned waste company Energnist and the energy company A2X withdrew from the tender, which they had worked on together.

This leaves only Aalborg Portland.

- We have invested a lot of money and worked for a long time to make it a success. Our project is fully mature, and both technically and commercially everything has been completed.

- But the conditions have simply made it impossible right now, says Peter Harbo, partner at A2X, to Børsen.

A2X and Energnist refer, among other things, to the fact that there are too great risks in participating in the tender. Among other things, the companies risk being fined if they do not meet the deadlines for capturing the promised amount of CO2.

According to the companies, the schedule for the tender has been too tight - even though the tender deadline has been extended several times, so that it now expires on January 27.

Last year, the government launched a tender for a support pool of DKK 28.7 billion, which was to be targeted at capturing and storing CO2.

16 companies bid for the task.

In May this year, the Danish Energy Agency announced that it had selected ten companies to participate in the tender.

They were selected based on their experience with projects and activities involving CO2 capture and storage or major construction projects.

- It is expected that the pool can contribute to reducing Denmark's annual CO2 emissions by 2.3 million tons from 2030, the Danish Energy Agency announced at the time.

But as time went on, company after company withdrew from the tender, including Ørsted and Hofor.

Now only Aalborg Portland remains.

The company's planned project will, according to plan, be able to reduce CO2 emissions by 1.4 million tons per year, which is not enough to reach the 2.3 million tons.
