The independent provider of risk, verification and standardization services, DNV, has now verified the pilot phase of Project Greensand's work on the transport and storage of CO2 in the North Sea. This is done through the award of the so-called "Statement of Conformity". Project Greensand is thus a step closer to the first storage of CO2 in the North Sea subsoil, which the project is working to test, develop and demonstrate. This is stated by the parties behind Project Greensands in a statement.
DNV is a leader when it comes to developing, ensuring and setting the highest standards for safety in offshore operations. It is therefore very exciting for Project Greensand that all elements of the project's pilot phase have been verified by DNV, so that it meets Danish legislation as well as Danish and international standards.
- We must have the best in the field to vouch for safety. The independent verification from DNV is a crucial step so that we can continue our work to store CO2 in the Danish subsoil - and show that we can make a significant contribution to the green transition by storing CO2. The complexity of our solutions is high, and it is a great recognition to have our work verified, says Søren Reinhold Poulsen, Project Director of Project Greensand.
This is not the first time that DNV has verified Project Greensand's work. DNV has previously investigated the sandstone reservoir 1,800 meters below the seabed, where CO2 will be permanently stored. Here, DNV assessed that the reservoir conceptually has both the right size and strength to store CO2.
The consortium behind Project Greensand consists of 23 Danish and international companies and organizations that work to contribute to the green transition in Denmark through the storage of CO2 under the seabed in the North Sea. In December 2022, the Danish Energy Agency granted Project Greensand the first Danish permit for CO2 storage ever, allowing up to 15,000 tons of CO2 to be stored in the Nini West field in Project Greensand's pilot phase.
