Hands-on with the 2030 climate goals :
23-year-old Simon is involved in the preparations for the first CCS injection

Blue Water's ship PSV Aurora Storm is about to have the frames installed that will ensure that 40 special containers with CO2 can be safely transported from Antwerp to the Nini field in the Danish part of the North Sea.

The plan is for the first CO2 to be pumped into the Danish underground between Christmas and New Year. This will take place as part of Project Greensand, which INEOS, Bluewater and Semco Maritime, in addition to 20 other partners, are part of. CCS or Carbon Capture and Storage is the part of Denmark's 2030 climate target to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 70 percent.

For this, Bluewater's ship PSV Aurora Storm is being prepared to sail the 420 nautical miles (676 km) with the commercial CO2 from Antwerp in Belgium to the North Sea. CO2 will be able to be transported in so-called cryogenic iso-tanks, which ensure that the transport can take place at 15 bar pressure and minus 30 degrees.

Each of the 40 special tanks is filled with 20 tons of CO2. The tanks are so special that the 80 tanks that will be used have been difficult to obtain. There are only 800 tanks in the whole world, so 10 percent are needed. of the world capacity for the project.

Forty containers will be in Antwerp for filling, and another forty will be on the way between Antwerp and the Nini field.

First work assignment for Semco

On board the PSV Aurora Storm, 23-year-old EUX blacksmith Simon Nordstjærne Holm has been working to prepare the reinforcement frames for the 40 containers since November.

- I have welded plates on the deck that can hold containers, says the Semco Maritime employee, who has been employed since September.

Although he was educated over two years ago, this is his first job after military service, as it ended up being a time as a constable in the Danish Armed Forces.

- It has been exciting, and it has given me a lot of experience as a novice in the profession. It has given insight into how it all works, says Simon Nordstjærne Holm.

The working day has been from 6 am to 6 pm, and the weather has not been a big help. It has complicated the work, but it has been successful nonetheless.

- The workpieces must be 20 degrees, because we can weld on them, so we have heated them up with gas burners. It's open-air work with low temperatures, and it's been raining almost the whole time, explains Simon Nordstjærne Holm, who can take it with a big smile.

Missing offshore certificates

But when the work on making the reinforcement frames for the containers is finished, the newly hired traveling fitter won't be going out to the North Sea.

- I haven't received the offshore courses and certificates yet, but I will later, he explains.

So instead of the North Sea in the coming months, he's heading somewhere else.

- I know I'm going to Thyborøn next, explains Simon Nordstjærne Holm.

The fact that CCS is part of the climate goals, and that he is thus part of the green transition, was actually new to him. But Semco Maritime has long since corrected that.

- I had heard nothing about CCS before I started here. We were all gathered in the canteen, where we were thoroughly informed. So now I know what the different things mean, they say.
