CO2 storage project in Kalundborg applies to take next step

CO2 Storage Kalundborg has applied for permission to construct a temporary drilling facility as part of the exploration and testing phase.

CO2 Storage Kalundborg has applied for the necessary permits to initiate the next phase of the project, which will investigate the possibilities for permanent storage of CO2 underground at Kalundborg.

The project has entered into an agreement with a local landowner to establish a temporary drilling facility between Skippingevej and Særslev. Therefore, an application has been made to the authorities with a view to obtaining a permit to construct the temporary facility and subsequently initiate drilling. According to the plan, construction can begin in 2026, but the timing depends on the case processing time and whether the permit is granted. The drilling itself is expected to last 2-4 months.

The application is being made as part of the preparation of an exploration and testing phase, where drilling will be carried out to a depth of approximately 1,900 meters to collect data from the subsurface layer. Water will subsequently be pumped down to support advanced simulation models. The two phases will take place in parallel.

- We work with great care and with safety as our top priority. We need to have a precise picture of the subsoil. It is crucial that we gain in-depth knowledge of the geology so that it can be clarified whether safe and permanent storage of CO2 can be initiated in the long term to reduce climate change, says Ulrik Olbjørn, project manager at CO2 Storage Kalundborg.

The work will be carried out under stricter environmental requirements and ongoing supervision. After completion, the area will be re-established as agricultural land. The collected data will form the basis for the authorities' decision on possible future CO2 storage, which can contribute to achieving Denmark's climate ambitions.

CO2 Storage Kalundborg is a collaboration between the energy companies Equinor and Ørsted and the Danish state - represented by the North Sea Foundation.
