Aalborg Portland is now raising its climate ambitions with an official goal of being CO2-neutral on its own emissions by 2030. This is based on plans to invest in a CO2 capture plant, which, with support from the EU's Innovation Fund, will reduce emissions by 1.5 million tons of CO2. Together with other climate initiatives, this will enable the company to achieve the goal of net-zero scope 1 emissions.

The new strategy is based on three main elements: increased use of alternative fuels, development and increased sales of CO2-reduced products, and CO2 capture. Aalborg Portland expects to make a final decision on the investment in the capture plant, which will be called ACCSION, within the coming year. The ACCSION project is being implemented in collaboration with French Air Liquide and will be one of the first fully integrated onshore CCS value chains in Europe.

- Aalborg Portland has an ambition to be part of the solution to Denmark's climate ambitions, and now we are taking a new big step on the way with a very ambitious but at the same time realistic goal of being CO2-neutral on our own emissions by 2030. In this way, we not only ensure a significant contribution to Denmark's 2030 goal, but we are also setting a completely new standard for cement production here in Denmark, says Søren Holm Christensen, CEO of Aalborg Portland.

Good progress

Since 2021, the company has reduced its CO2 emissions by 812,000 tons, corresponding to 36 percent of emissions that year. Mainly through increased use of biogenic fuels and increased sales of CO2-reduced products. The goal of CO2 neutrality in 2030 is a further development of previous plans, including the binding climate agreement with the government from 2020 and an expanded goal in 2022.

- We have already come a long way on our climate journey, where in just three years we have succeeded in cutting CO2 emissions by more than a third. We have done this primarily by switching production to use a larger amount of alternative fuels, and our ambitions for this part of our climate plan remain unchanged. We expect to increase the share of biogenic fuels further in the coming years, just as the connection of natural gas followed by biogas is also moving closer. Combined with our upcoming CO2 capture plant, we will thus be able to capture all of our direct CO2 emissions, explains Søren Holm Christensen.

If the investment is approved as planned, the CO2 capture plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2029. Aalborg Portland will then be able to become the first cement producer in the world with net-zero emissions from both grey and white cement production.
