The United States is working to arrange a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, US Vice President J.D. Vance said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Reuters reports.
However, in the interview, the vice president said that he did not believe it would be "productive" for Putin to meet with Zelensky before the Russian president has met with US President Donald Trump.
The two presidents are scheduled to meet in the US state of Alaska on August 15. Both the US and Russia announced this on Saturday night. It is the two leaders' first physical meeting since 2019.
The meeting between Trump and Putin is to be held in the US state of Alaska. A territory that was Russian until Russia sold it to the United States in 1867.
Before announcing the upcoming meeting, Trump said on Friday that "some exchange of territories" would be made for the benefit of both Ukraine and Russia, and that the issue would be discussed soon.
But no form of surrender of Ukrainian territory can be discussed, Zelenskyy emphasizes in a post on X.
- The answer to the question of Ukrainian territory is already found in the Ukrainian constitution. No one will deviate from it - and no one will be able to, he writes.
In a written comment, according to the Reuters news agency, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, also emphasized that occupied territories belong to Ukraine.
- While we work towards a lasting and just peace, international law is very clear. All temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine, Kallas said on Sunday.
She also stated to the news agency that any agreement between the US and Russia on an end to the war in Ukraine must involve both Ukraine and the EU.
- The US has the power to force Russia into serious negotiations. Any agreement between the US and Russia must involve Ukraine and the EU, because it is a question of the security of Ukraine and the whole of Europe, she said.
Kaja Kallas also stated that she would call an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU countries on Monday.
