The offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 3, owned by Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure, delivered its first power to the German grid on December 3. With a capacity of 913 MW, the farm will be Ørsted's largest in Germany and will supply green energy to both industry and households when it is fully operational in the first quarter of 2026. Ørsted announced this in a press release.

The offshore wind farm, located 72 km off the German North Sea coast, consists of 83 wind turbines with a capacity of 11 MW each. It was built without a traditional offshore transformer station, but instead with a new connection concept, where the wind turbines are connected directly to the DolWin Epsilon converter station.

- Offshore wind will play a central role in ensuring European energy independence and jobs in the manufacturing industry. Borkum Riffgrund 3 is a good example of both. The project is being built by European companies and will deliver a significant amount of green energy to industry through long-term agreements, says Patrick Harnett, Plant Director at Ørsted.

The green power from the park will be delivered through several long-term power purchase agreements with companies such as Amazon, BASF, Covestro, REWE Group and Google. Together, the agreements cover 786 MW with terms of between 10 and 25 years and will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in European industry.

When Borkum Riffgrund 3 is fully operational, Ørsted's total offshore wind capacity in Germany will increase to around 2.5 GW – equivalent to green electricity for 2.5 million German households.
