A rare meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping took place in South Korea on Thursday.
It was the first meeting between the two heads of state since 2019.
The meeting lasted about 1 hour and 40 minutes and resulted, among other things, in the US lowering its import tariffs on Chinese goods.
Here you can read about what came out of the meeting:
- According to Trump, the US will lower tariffs on Chinese goods by 10 percent, so that in future it will be 47 percent.
- The countries have agreed on an agreement on rare earths, which will last one year and can be extended. Rare earths are used in the production of a wide range of electronic products, and China is an important exporter on the global market.
- China will put a tightening of controls on rare earth exports, which was introduced earlier in October, on hold.
- According to Trump, China has committed to working "very hard" to stop the export of the highly addictive drug fentanyl to the United States. Fentanyl has become widespread in American drug addiction communities in recent years.
- According to Trump, China has agreed to once again purchase "tremendous quantities" of soybeans and other agricultural goods from the United States.
- China and the United States have agreed to cooperate on Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since the Russian invasion in 2022, Trump says. It is unclear what the cooperation entails.
- Xi Jinping has been less specific than Trump after the meeting. According to Xi, relations between the US and China remain stable.
- Delegations from the two countries have reached an agreement on important issues related to the economy and trade, Xi said without specifying what was agreed upon.
- Xi Jinping calls on delegations from the two countries to complete the follow-up to the meeting as soon as possible.
- In addition, Xi Jinping says that the countries must avoid ending up in a "vicious circle of retaliation".
- Trump will visit China next year, both Trump and China have confirmed. According to Trump, the visit will take place in April.
