- We are allocating the money to give Danish companies the best conditions to develop Power-to-X technology and help kick-start the production of green fuels. This will not only benefit Denmark, but also the whole of Europe, Minister for Climate and Energy Dan Jørgensen (S) was able to say last week, after the government and a broad majority in the Folketing allocated 850 million kroner for the development of Danish Power-to-X projects in Denmark and the EU.
The funds are allocated to a joint European project on green hydrogen, a so-called IPCEI, which aims to support large, transnational development projects that can benefit the whole of Europe.
- We must ensure that it is Danish companies that are called upon when it comes to cracking the code for the green fuels of the future both in Europe and in the world. That is why I am pleased that the government has received support so that we can give the development and production a boost. This will strengthen our exports, create more green jobs and take us another step towards fulfilling our climate ambitions, says Minister of Business and Industry Simon Kollerup (S).
The Danish Business Authority has assessed the 10 incoming applications and has therefore invited the following 6 projects to participate in the upcoming European matchmaking process as direct IPCEI partners:
- Blue Seal, represented by Ballard Power Systems
- Green Fuels for Denmark, represented by Ørsted
- Green CCU Hub Aalborg, represented by REintegrate
- HySynergy, represented by Everfuel
- HØST, represented by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners
- PtX@EIIS, represented by GreenLab Skive
The process of matching the six Danish projects with projects from other countries began in early June, and the final selection is expected in July.
Important push forward
In the future, the market for green hydrogen is expected to constitute a significant part of the total energy market.
- This is a very important agreement. It gives Danish companies a push forward in relation to the development of green hydrogen and Power-to-X, so that green fuels can become a competitive alternative to fossil fuels, says political director of DI Emil Fannikke Kiær.
The agreement is financed with funds from, among others, the corona reserve in the 2021 Finance Act, the Research Reserve, Export Package 2 and from the pool until the end of the basic amount for decentralized district heating plants.
Lars Aagaard, CEO of Dansk Energi, emphasizes, however, that it may turn out that more measures and additional financing are needed if all Danish projects come through the European needle's eye.
- Denmark has cheap green electricity, we have technology suppliers, we have large transport companies and a well-functioning energy system. Therefore, we have every opportunity to house parts of the global industry that will arise from a European focus on green hydrogen. But this requires that we participate in European cooperation on technology development and that national political measures are continuously followed up, he says.
