Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a local ceasefire around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a press release on Friday.

This will allow the repair of the last remaining backup power supply to the nuclear power plant. The power supply was damaged as a result of military activity on January 2, it said.

- The IAEA continues to work closely with both parties to ensure nuclear safety at the ZNPP (Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, ed.) and to prevent a nuclear accident during the conflict. This temporary ceasefire - the fourth we have negotiated - demonstrates the indispensable role we continue to play, said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in the press release.

Repairs will begin in the coming days, the IAEA said.

Zaporizhzhya is Europe's largest nuclear power plant and is located in southeastern Ukraine. The plant has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022, shortly after the war in Ukraine began.

The plant has been shut down since Russia invaded the neighboring country. But the nuclear power plant still needs electricity to maintain cooling and safety systems.

Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of risking a nuclear disaster by attacking the nuclear facility. The IAEA said in December that the massive steel structure built to contain radioactive material at the decommissioned Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine had been damaged.

The steel structure had been damaged in a drone attack earlier in 2025, the nuclear agency said. According to the UN, the level of radioactive radiation was subsequently normal and stable, and there were no reports of leaks.

The Chernobyl accident is considered the worst nuclear accident ever. In 1986, one of the reactors at the nuclear power plant exploded, sending a radioactive cloud over Europe.
