Organizations welcome new Marine Nature Fund

The think tank Hav, the Danish Nature Conservation Association and Green Power Denmark expect that the 500 million DKK in the Harbour Nature Foundation will play an important role in helping life return to the sea.

On Thursday, the government finally reached an agreement with the Radical Party, the Socialist Party, the Green Party and the Conservatives on how DKK 500 million allocated to the Marine Nature Fund will be used to restore nature in the sea and gather knowledge.

The waters at the top of the fund's list are the Little Belt, the South Funen Archipelago, the Great Belt, the Samsø Belt, Sejerø Bay, the North and East coasts of Zealand, Møn and Taarbæk Rev.

The plan for the Marine Nature Fund is being received with enthusiasm by the think tank Hav, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation and Green Power Denmark. This is stated by the parties in a joint press release.

- The sea in Denmark is in deep crisis and needs massive help. That is why we are very pleased that such large funds are being allocated for specific nature restoration projects, says Maria Reumert Gjerding, president of the Danish Society for Nature Conservation.

Offshore wind farms can help the marine environment

In the longer term, the foundation will also have an important task of ensuring that the upcoming offshore wind farms contribute as positively as possible to nature in the ocean.

The planned offshore wind farms – and even more in the future – will occupy large areas of ocean. It is therefore good that the parties to the agreement have listened to the organizations and decided to include this effort in the foundation's work.

- It has been important to us that the Marine Nature Foundation also looks at future methods for improving the marine environment. It is crucial that the offshore wind farms contribute to a rich flora and fauna in the ocean. But there is a lot of work to be done to conduct experiments and collect knowledge, and the foundation will play an important role in this, says Thomas Aarestrup Jepsen, director of renewable energy production at Green Power Denmark.

The think tank Hav, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation and Green Power Denmark have a great desire that the Marine Nature Foundation's efforts for a balanced ocean continue after 2030, when the funding is scheduled to expire.

"Therefore, it is gratifying that politicians have agreed to revisit the agreement on the Marine Nature Foundation no later than 2028 in order to find lasting financing for the foundation from several different sources, so that it can eventually become a permanent and independent foundation," reads the statement from the three organizations.
