Ørsted gets major boost in Polish offshore project

The Baltica project is one step closer to realization and could be a breakthrough for Polish offshore wind. Ørsted is planning a joint venture to build Baltica 3 and Baltica 2, which have a potential of 2.5 GW.

For many years, Poland has been known as the country in Europe with the blackest energy supply, which has largely consisted of coal. However, wind energy is becoming increasingly popular in Poland, which is also preparing to move its wind turbines out to sea in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea.

The Polish potential within offshore wind is to be realized, among other things, through the Baltica project, which came a step closer to realization on Thursday. Here, the Polish authorities awarded Baltica 3 and Baltica 2 a CfD contract, where the contract for difference will be a maximum of 319.6 PLN/MWh – just over 520 DKK per MWh.

This is a big step in getting the project realized, estimates Rasmus Errboe, Regional Director for Continental Europe at Ørsted, which has entered into a joint venture with the state-owned Polish energy company PGE to build the offshore wind farms.

- The contract for Baltica 3 and 2 is a major milestone for Polish offshore wind and for Ørsted and PGE's shared ambitions in Poland. Once the joint venture agreement is completed, we look forward to delivering these important infrastructure projects and helping Poland exploit the vast, green energy resources in the Baltic Sea. The offshore wind industry will play a key role in Poland's transition to green power and has the potential to create thousands of jobs in countries

In February, Ørsted entered into the joint venture agreement with PGE, where Ørsted is investing just over DKK 1.1 billion in the project. Baltica 3 and 2 have a potential of 1 GW and 1.5 GW.

Poland does not yet have any offshore wind connected to the grid, but has committed to installing 3.8 GW by 2030 and a full 11 GW by 2040.

The Polish sector of the Baltic Sea also has a potential of up to 28 GW by 2050 and could thus constitute the EU's largest market for offshore wind, writes Ørsted.
