In November, a total of 18 municipalities that make up the Business Region MidtVest and the Business Region North Denmark came together on a proposal for a green development contribution, which broadly means that the municipalities that deploy the most renewable energy will be financially rewarded, which could, for example, translate into better welfare in the municipalities.

The proposal for a green development contribution implies that 0.4 øre will be given per kWh of green electricity produced locally. For the Danish municipalities that have taken on the expansion of renewable energy, this will correspond to an annual revenue of around 500 million in 2023. kr.

- The municipalities that are Denmark's green engine should experience that the effort leads to development and better conditions for their citizens. The contribution can go to a general boost in local welfare, the development of attractive residential areas, business development, more green initiatives or to repay municipal debt, says Per Bach Laursen in a press release.

Experienced responsiveness

Now Dorte West (V), chairman of Business Region MidtVest and mayor of Herning Municipality, and Per Bach Laursen (V), chairman of Business Region North Denmark and mayor of Vesthimmerland Municipality, have made their way to Christiansborg to present the proposal to national politicians.

The 18 municipalities, which are currently responsible for approximately half of Denmark's renewable energy, believe that the proposal will be able to deal with increasing public aversion to the construction of renewable energy.

- Today we often experience that neighbors of wind turbines, solar parks and biogas plants see green transition as a burden - not a gain. We want to ensure support for the green transition by making it clear that it creates value locally. The current compensation schemes are not noticeable, and we would like to change that, says Dorte West.

At Christiansborg they met with, among others, Signe Munk and Theresa Berg Andersen from the Socialist People's Party, Henrik Frandsen from the Moderates and Martin Lidegaard and Samira Nawa from the Radical Left.

- We experienced politicians who agreed on the premise that it is worrying when the reluctance grows greater and the development comes to a standstill more and more. They understood the seriousness of the situation and the local concern we have for our areas' continued commitment to the expansion of green energy, says Dorte West.
