Denmark is facing a huge construction task if the vision of making Denmark free from Russian gas is to become a reality. This must be done by quadrupling the production of green electricity from wind turbines and solar cells and making households free from natural gas by switching to district heating.
The large construction task will mean that other construction projects must be put on hold. These could be road projects, for example. This was said by Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen (S) on Tuesday at a press conference in the Prime Minister's Office, where the government presented its energy proposal "Denmark can do more II".
- We will go through with a comb what projects and things we can say are important, but in light of what has happened with Russia's invasion, there is something that is even more important, says Nicolai Wammen.
- There will be some difficult decisions. For example, if you look at a road project, there will be mayors who want to rush the green transition, but also want a specific path.
Nicolai Wammen does not hide what the government believes is the most important thing:
- We must jointly step in and take that responsibility and see if there are some things here that come first. And we believe that the task of becoming independent of Russian gas is the most important task we face right now.
He will discuss this with the municipalities during the negotiations on the municipal economy for next year, which will start in May.
With the government's reform proposal "Denmark can do more II", which was presented on Tuesday, the vision is that production from solar energy and onshore wind will quadruple by 2030. This will mean a doubling of production from onshore wind turbines.
In addition, the approximately 400,000 Danish homes that are currently heated with natural gas will need to switch to a greener energy source. Up to half of them are estimated to be able to switch to district heating. According to the government, this will happen continuously and no later than 2028.
