It is completely out of proportion that two senior employees in the energy industry are to receive triple-digit million bonuses, believes the Social Democrats' political spokesman.
However, the party refuses to speculate on concrete measures if the companies were to decide to maintain the enormous bonuses that two people in Energi Danmark are to receive, according to the business media Finans.
- When I heard that, I was just as outraged as I think the rest of Denmark was. It is clear that we have free wage formation in Denmark. But I am very pleased that the minister is entering the matter so constructively and actively, and that he is now holding a discussion with the industry, says Social Democratic spokesman Christian Rabjerg Madsen.
Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M) has asked for a statement. Initially, the message from the minister was that the government would not interfere. Users could opt out of the companies if they found it unreasonable. It is quite obvious, the S-spokesperson believes.
- It is an excellent call if you experience that your energy company behaves in a way where bonuses are paid out that are so out of proportion that you then reconsider your supplier, says Rabjerg.
But that does not absolve the companies, he believes, so it is therefore right for the minister to get involved in the matter. After Finans wrote about the high bonuses for energy traders in Energi Danmark, one of the companies behind it - Andel - has announced that the bonuses will not be paid out this year.
Many have earned more than expected
According to the media, the bonuses have become so high because the industry has earned a lot more than expected, and because there was no ceiling on their bonuses.
QUESTION: If the company now says that it is not something you should interfere in, what do you say to that?
- Yes, then we have to deal with it. I am optimistic that a discussion can make the industry and the specific companies reconsider whether this is right and wise, says Christian Rabjerg.
QUESTION: What would you be able to do?
- I do not want to go into further consideration of it. Now, I hope, first of all, that the minister's right and sensible initiative can lead to self-examination and reconsideration in the industry and especially in the companies concerned.
QUESTION: Is it out of the question that you will do something if they do not react to it?
- Now I would like to see how that discussion goes first. I am hopeful and believe that a discussion between the minister and the industry can make the specific companies reconsider whether this is appropriate and wise.
