The world's largest e-methanol plant will not only be good news for the green transition by producing green fuels. The large PtX plant will also be able to supply green district heating to a total of 3,300 households in Aabenraa Municipality. This is stated by European Energy, which is behind the PtX plant, in a press release.

The company has thus entered into an agreement with Aabenraa Fjernvarme, which will take the surplus heat from the upcoming e-methanol plant at Kassø.

- We are very pleased with the agreement with Aabenraa Fjernvarme. The collaboration can show the citizens of Aabenraa Municipality that there are local, green benefits when renewable energy projects are launched in the area. At the same time, the collaboration will provide valuable knowledge on how to get the most out of the world's largest e-methanol plant, and thus also how to make sector coupling with other future Power-to-X projects in practice, says Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, Head of Project Economics & Optimization, Power-to-X, from European Energy.

Large solar park to supply the energy

The e-methanol plant will be connected directly to the Nordic region's largest solar park in Kassø and will therefore run partly on locally produced green electricity. The location of the plant means that Aabenraa Fjernvarme will establish a heat pipeline to the plant close to Kassø transformer station.

European Energy expects that in a few years, even more surplus heat can be collected as more experience is gained in operation.

In addition to European Energy and Aabenraa Fjernvarme, Aalborg University and the University of Southern Denmark are also participating in the development of the new district heating solution.
