Professor warns against excessive installation of solar parks

The municipalities have approved over 50 new solar parks in the coming years. It makes no sense to establish more if the need is not there, says the professor.

It makes no sense to build more solar parks if there is no need for the increased amount of green electricity, and if the electricity cannot be stored or converted into fuels, for example.

This is what Brian Vad Mathiesen, a professor of energy planning at Aalborg University, tells Jyllands-Posten.

Jyllands-Posten has compiled a summary showing that Danish municipalities have approved plans for more than 50 new solar parks in the coming years.

The new planning approvals are part of Denmark's overall goal of reaching a production of 20 gigawatts in six years.

- We will certainly not need all the solar power that is being established. Instead of just setting up a lot of plants, we should build renewable energy as consumption arises. And we shouldn't beat each other over the fact that we won't achieve a quadrupling by 2030, says Brian Vad Mathiesen.

Lack of storage

According to Jyllands-Posten, 2024 has already set a record for how many hours the production of electricity is greater than consumption.

It has also not yet been possible to store the electricity produced by solar parks on a large scale, or to convert it into fuels that can later be used to produce electricity when the sun is not shining.

Peter Møllgard, who is chairman of the Climate Council, according to the newspaper, does not buy the criticism and says that the parks must be set up to keep up with the electrification of Danish society.

According to Møllgard, one should either start with electrification or production of electricity. It makes the most sense to start with production, he says.

Danish solar cells currently produce 3.5 gigawatts. When the target of 20 gigawatts is reached in 2030, it will be enough to supply 20 million households, writes Jyllands-Posten.
