Ørsted has purchased the Garreenleen solar energy project in Ireland from Terra Solar for an undisclosed amount. The 160 MW project will be Ørsted's second solar project in Ireland and is also one of the country's largest and will be able to produce enough green energy to supply up to 56,000 households with electricity, Ørsted said in a statement.

The project's first phase of 81 MW is expected to be completed in 2025, and the second phase of 79 MW is expected to be completed in 2026, provided that Ørsted makes a final investment decision.

The project is located 15 km outside the town of Carlow in southeastern Ireland and contributes to Ørsted's goal of reaching a global capacity of 17.5 GW in onshore renewable energy by the end of 2030.

- Ørsted has an ambition to create energy solutions across technologies and is investing in many different renewable energy sources to ensure security of supply and independence. When the project is completed, the two phases will have a combined capacity of 160 MW, making it one of Ireland's largest solar power plants, says TJ Hunter, Senior Director for Onshore Ireland & UK at Ørsted.

The acquisition of Garreenleen further boosts Ørsted's investments in renewable energy in Ireland and follows Ørsted's first Irish solar project, Ballinrea near Carrigaline in Cork, which was completed in the summer of 2022. Ballinrea is expected to be operational by the end of 2025 and will be able to supply up to 16,000 Irish homes with electricity.
