Nyborg wants to ensure that solar parks provide more than just climate benefits

The City Council of Nyborg Municipality has decided that applications to install solar cells will be assessed based on a number of new criteria that will motivate energy developers to take greater account of the area where they want to establish solar cells.

NYBORG: It should not only be good news for the climate when solar parks are to be set up in Nyborg Municipality in the future. Thus, neighbors, nature and cultural heritage must be protected and involved much more when developers want to set up solar cells on fields and larger areas of land in the future.

With effect from June at the latest, the City Council has adopted a number of new criteria that take the overall beneficial effect of projects for the area more into account in the decision.

With the adoption of the new criteria, Nyborg Municipality will no longer decide on solar cell applications on a case-by-case basis. Instead, the municipal plan will only govern whether the green light is given or not. This is done to get a holistic view of the overall land use and location of solar cell systems in the municipality, the municipality states in a press release.

- Right now we are experiencing a very high demand for setting up solar cells in several places in Nyborg Municipality. But we are dealing with large facilities that we will have to live with for many years to come. That is why it is important that we now have some rules of the game so that we can compare and select the very best solar cell projects that create the most value – not only for the climate – but for as many people as possible locally, says Per Jespersen (A), chairman of the Climate and Nature Committee.

An annual application round

Nyborg Municipality has also decided that in the future there will be an application round once a year, where developers can apply with their projects. The newly adopted points system will be used here.

These are not absolute criteria, but a comparison between the projects. Here, themes such as 'does it create added value for the municipality and the citizens?' will be of great importance and will also be decisive for whether landowners can be allowed to install solar cells on their fields.

- This is an important issue for me and the entire municipality, because it is about taking the necessary, big steps in a more sustainable direction together with developers and citizens. We must become greener while also taking care of our unique local areas and beautiful landscapes. Helping the business community and listening to citizens can go hand in hand - this case is an example of this, says Mayor Kenneth Muhs (V).

A new pool is opened every year. The first time with an application deadline at the end of September 2024 and again in 2025.
