New online portal speeds up screening of renewable energy projects

In particular, the number of fully screened solar cell projects has experienced a large increase.

The number of new wind turbines and especially new solar power plants that want to be connected to the electricity transmission grid is growing rapidly. In the past year, Energinet has completed the screening of solar power projects with a total capacity of around nine GW. In comparison, solar power parks with a total capacity of less than 0.5 GW are currently connected to the electricity transmission grid.

With the completed screenings, a plan has been drawn up for where and how the many plants can be connected to the electricity transmission grid, as well as the expansions and reinforcements of the underlying electricity grid that are necessary for the new electricity producers to be connected.

The acceleration comes as a result of Energinet opening a new online portal a year ago for installers of, among other things, solar cell and wind turbine projects, so that they can screen their projects more easily and quickly and make a plan for how the projects will be connected to the electricity grid, Energinet states in a statement.

In that year, Energinet has managed to have completed screening 9 GW of new electricity production - almost exclusively solar cell projects - as well as around 3.5 GW of new electricity consumption, typically hydrogen plants that are so large that they must be connected directly to the overall electricity transmission grid.

Projects not certain to be realized

A total of 47 new solar and wind projects and 21 consumption projects have been registered in the portal, corresponding to a total capacity of 14.5 GW. Of the total of 68 projects, 50 have been completed.

- Just a few years ago, we screened none or only one connection to the electricity transmission per year. It is a completely wild development that we have experienced in Denmark, and several of the new solar parks are so large that they have the same capacity as the largest traditional power plants in Denmark, and several of the consumers will be among the largest in Denmark, says Anders Steen Kristensen, Head of Electricity Grid Planning at Energinet.

With the completion screening, there is now a plan for grid connection of the projects. However, it may take years before the projects are realized. First, the plants must be installed, and second, the electricity grid must be prepared. In some places, it will require very little expansion, so that new plants can come online in a short time, in other places it will require extensive expansion of the electricity grid. Furthermore, the completion screening is not a guarantee that the projects will be implemented.

The list of projects registered in the screening portal does not include new large offshore wind farms, e.g. Thor, Hesselø, as well as the solar cell projects and onshore wind projects that are intended to be connected to the electricity distribution grid. The real figure for how much new green electricity production may be on the way is therefore much higher, according to Energinet.
