A new report, Global Tipping Points, published by Exeter University in collaboration with WWF, concludes that the world could reach its first climatic tipping point within a decade. The report points to the risk of collapse in several of the planet's key systems - including ice caps, rainforests and ocean currents.
According to the researchers, parts of the polar ice cap have probably already passed a critical point, while the Amazon may be closer to collapse than previously thought.
- If we do not act decisively now, we risk losing the Amazon rainforest, ice caps and vital ocean currents. In that case, all of humanity faces a real disaster scenario, says Mike Barrett, chief scientific advisor at WWF.
The report is published a month before COP30 in Brazil and is intended to help put climate tipping points on the agenda.
The researchers also highlight positive progress, such as the spread of electric cars and green energy, but warn that "every tenth of a degree counts" if the worst consequences are to be avoided.
