With the signing of a new strategic partnership, Danish NKT and Norwegian Hyrdro will push the development and shift to low-carbon aluminum and increase their role in reducing the environmental impact of cables.
NKT is committed to the partnership supporting the company in realizing its goal of reducing scope 3 emissions by 27.5 percent in 2030 compared to 2019, NKT said in a press release.
- We are proud to enter into this strategic partnership with our long-term partner, Hydro. They have a proven track record of delivering low-carbon aluminum and will help us meet the growing demand from energy companies and grid operators for cable systems with a lower CO2e footprint, says Will Hendrikx, COO and Deputy CEO of NKT.
The partners will also collaborate on minimizing emissions associated with warehousing, logistics and transportation, as well as opportunities for more efficient supply chains. Towards 2030, Hydro and NKT will collaborate on research and product development to exploit the use of aluminium wire rod, which offers the opportunity for an even lower CO2e footprint.
- Power cables play a crucial role in the transmission and connection of renewable energy, and the energy sector has significant potential for increased use of aluminium in its infrastructure. Our joint roadmap with NKT will pave the way for aluminium and thereby reduce the carbon footprint of Europe's electricity grid. With this collaboration, we continue our strategy of entering into long-term partnerships with sustainability leaders in industries that are crucial for the green transition, says Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President of Hydro Aluminium Metal at Hydro.
