Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) has arrived in Berlin, where she will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday morning. At a short press conference before the meeting, Mette Frederiksen says that Europe is facing a "more uncertain reality".
- We are seeing Russian hybrid attacks in Europe and in the Baltic Sea, she mentions at the press conference, which will be shown on TV 2 News.
However, she does not elaborate on which attacks she is referring to.
- We need to show character in Europe. We need a stronger and more resolute Europe.
This must be done, among other things, through a strengthening of the European defense industry, it says. Mette Frederiksen is on a tour of a number of European cities on Tuesday.
The day begins in Berlin with a meeting with Olaf Scholz before she travels to Paris to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron. She will then go to Brussels, where she will meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The agenda for all meetings is "European unity", the Prime Minister's Office said in a press release on Monday.
Russian shadow fleet poses threat
At the press conference, Olaf Scholz also mentioned the recent increased focus on the Baltic Sea, after critical infrastructure such as electricity and gas cables on the Baltic Sea seabed have been subjected to repeated sabotage. He says this shows "the threat posed by the Russian shadow fleet".
As a result of the cases in the Baltic Sea, the NATO defense alliance has increased its presence in the area. Denmark is contributing both ships and fighter jets as well as special operations forces.
- The intensified monitoring will be carried out with, among other things, aircraft and ships through periodic deployment and in ongoing coordination with NATO and Baltic allies. The effort may include a frigate, an inspection ship, fighter jets, surveillance aircraft and special operations forces, the Ministry of Defense announced on January 23.
