If the state-owned company Energinet has its way, a large transformer station will be built at Solhøj Kildeplads in Taastrup, which is located near an area where 135,000 people's water consumption is extracted from underground, making it one of the largest water supplies in Denmark.
This has prompted Hofor to sound the alarm. The utility fears that the transformer station could contaminate the groundwater with oil and other chemicals if an accident such as a fire were to occur at the station, according to DR in a consultation response to the large construction project. Energinet rejects Hofor's concerns.
- Of course, Energinet would not establish a plant in an area of groundwater interest if we in any way believed that there was a risk that our plant would contaminate the groundwater, says Tove Stockmarr, senior consultant at Energinet's environmental assessment department.
The upcoming transformer station is one of the Energiø Bornholm. According to Energinet, Solhøj Kildeplads is an ideal location, as it is well located in relation to the cables that will transport electricity from Bornholm to homes in Zealand. However, the project still requires approval from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.
