European Energy has received planning permission for the Upper Calliope Solar Farm – a 1.1 GW solar farm near Gladstone in Queensland. The approval means that the project can now move forward with final design, grid connection and preparation for construction work.

The energy from the upcoming project has already been sold through a 25-year power purchase agreement with global mining and materials group Rio Tinto, which will purchase the entire production from the plant. The agreement provides long-term revenue security and supports the commercial basis of the project. This is stated in a press release by European Energy.

- With planning permission in place, we can now move forward with the Upper Calliope project – one of the largest projects that European Energy has completed to date. This is an important step and our experienced team can now move on to the next phase of development,” says Catriona McLeod, Vice President and Country Manager for Australia at European Energy.

The power from the solar farm will, among other things, supply Rio Tinto’s aluminium and alumina refineries in the Gladstone region. The project is located close to existing electricity infrastructure and a well-established industrial area, and the next steps will be to complete the grid connection, secure procurement and make a final investment decision.
