This is what it might look like when Energinet builds a new cable connection.
Peter Clausen, Energinet

Energinet will provide Midtsjælland with a better electricity grid and a nicer landscape with a new cable connection.

Overhead lines will be removed and a new cable connection will both beautify the nature and future-proof the electricity grid between Holbæk and Lejre to, among other things, be able to handle new electricity production from renewable energy plants.

A 29-kilometer-long cable connection will be built underground between Torslunde in Holbæk Municipality and Kirkeskovgård in Lejre Municipality in the coming years. This means that old high-voltage pylons will be removed, and a new high-voltage substation will be built at the same time that can support the production of electricity from renewable energy. Energinet informs in a press release.

The project, which Energinet is behind, is expected to start with the actual construction work in 2030 and be completed in 2031. The first studies are already underway, including mapping nature and wildlife along the planned route. An information meeting will be held on May 27 for affected landowners, and the project manager plans to have close contact with the local area.

- Right now we would like to have a dialogue with the people who own the land on which our cable will be laid, so that we can identify the factors that we need to take into account in our proposal for the route, says Jeppe Ottosen, project manager at Energinet.

Nicer and better electricity connection

The project will go through an environmental impact assessment, which must be approved by the Danish Agency for Green Land Redevelopment. This process is expected to last until 2028, after which agreements will be made with landowners. Those who will have cables in the ground will be compensated. At the same time, those who currently have masts standing will have these and the restrictions they entail removed.

The background for the cable laying is both an aesthetic and technical upgrade. The current overhead line is almost 40 years old. With the political decision to lay 132 kV connections underground during renovation, the project supports both beautification and the green transition.

- We will get a nicer landscape without high-voltage pylons – and we will get a stronger electricity grid that is ready for the needs of the future. This is good news for both citizens and the green transition, says Jeppe Ottosen.

A related project – the construction of a new high-voltage substation at Torslunde – is expected to start as early as August 2025.
