Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) is nominating Minister for Development Cooperation Dan Jørgensen (S) as the government's bid for a future EU Commissioner for Denmark. The Prime Minister announced this at a press conference on Wednesday, a few days before the deadline for the member states to send a name to the President of the EU Commission.
- I have chosen to appoint him for several different reasons. Of course, a long political experience. Dan has been a member of the Folketing for many years, has been a minister in several governments and has sat in the European Parliament for two terms, says Mette Frederiksen.
Before Dan Jørgensen can call himself Commissioner, he must go through a hearing in the EU Parliament. The entire nominated commission and the president will then be put to a vote in parliament, which can reject it.
The Prime Minister emphasizes that Dan Jørgensen has broad international experience, from the EU and the UN, and that he is therefore an obvious candidate.
Experience with international negotiations
Among other things, the Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy has had a central role as a negotiator at international climate conferences in recent years.
- Dan has participated in the climate negotiations at the UN, and there he has shown that he can also manage internationally. I am sure that Dan will be a good Commissioner for Denmark and for Europe in an increasingly turbulent world, says Mette Frederiksen.
Margrethe Vestager remains Denmark's EU Commissioner. She will be for at least a few more months. There has been criticism from other political parties that the government and the Prime Minister have been late in appointing a candidate for Commissioner. This could cost an influential post, the criticism goes.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at the press conference that she "has been in dialogue for a long time" with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who was appointed to lead the upcoming EU Commission before the summer.
- Based on the many talks, I expect that Denmark will receive a central portfolio, says Mette Frederiksen.
